About The Course

Tell Me About The Course

What Does It Cost And What Do I Get?

The Learn To Row course costs €150. This covers:

  • 8 coach led training sessions.
  • All necessary equipment and insurance.
  • Three months introductory club membership.

Once you’ve completed the course the introductory membership (which commences from the start of the course) gives you full use of the club facilities, and means you can spend some more time practising and enjoying rowing with our leisure group, before deciding whether you want to sign up as a full club member.

Who Is This Course Suitable For
  • Anyone who has not rowed before or has limited experience and wants to try the sport.
  • You must be able to swim – although we should point out its very rare for people to fall in, we just need to know that you can in case of an emergency.
  • The course is for people aged 18 and upwards.
What Will The Course Cover
The main purpose of the course is to get you rowing on the water – we aim to get people into a boat by the end of their first session.

  • Sessions are in our special training boats, which are for four people, and are very stable for beginners.
  • We will give you an introduction to the Rowing Club, the Boathouse, and its layout.
  • Familiarisation with the river – the training environment.
  • Rules Of The Road.
  • Full water and boat safety briefing to make sure you are comfortable and stay safe.
  • Explain the types of boat, the important parts of the boat, oars, and other equipment.
  • Learn and practise approved Irish Rowing Technique on indoor rowing machines.
  • By the end of the course you are not going to be a world beating rower, but you should be confident rowing a boat.

What Happens After The Course

What Do I Do After I Complete The Course

Leisure Rowing

On completion of the course you can join our leisure rowing group.
You will continue rowing with like-minded adults who enjoy messing about in boats on a beautiful stretch of the River Liffey.
We emphasize the social and fun aspects of rowing to our leisure members. It is all about gentle exercise and enjoyment at your own pace.
Our River Lounge is the obvious place to kick back after your row and enjoy coffee and home-made cakes in our Clun Café.
For the more adventurous, our crews also row abroad with other leisure crews, and we are now planning weekend tours in Ireland.

Competitive Rowing

If you are interested in serious rowing then competitive rowing may be for you. It involves a demanding training schedule 6 days a week and requires a lot of commitment. This includes gym training, ergometer (rowing machine) training and of course training on the river. Being part of a successful crew is tremendously rewarding but it requires hard work.

So what should you do? On completion of the Learn to Row course you can try out for our competitive men’s and women’s crews.

You will take the skills you have gained during your course, and with the help of our rowing coaches, fine tune develop them to an advanced level where applied power in the water increases speed towards the finish line.
This type of rowing suits competitive people who are driven to win.

Welcome to the world of competitive rowing.
